He attended St. Paul's School in Concord, New Hampshire, and then studied at Yale University. He first worked as a clerk in the offices of the New York Central Railroad.
He was a member of the secret society Skull and Bones while he attended Yale. He enjoyed fox hunting.
He was the son of Cornelius Vanderbilt II and Alice Claypoole Gwynne. He married Ellen ("Elsie") Tuck French in 1901. The couple later got divorced and he remarried Margaret Mary Emerson. In total, he had three sons: William Henry Vanderbilt III, Alfred Gwynne Vanderbilt Jr., and George Washington Vanderbilt III.
Historians initially believed he had a ticket booked for the Titantic, but it was actually his relative George Washington Vanderbilt II, the son of Cornelius Vanderbilt.
