His twin brother Jarvis Hayes is an American-Qatari college basketball coach and a former professional player.

Before joining the Bulldogs, Jonas had gone for assisting coaching at Belmont Abbey for five years, from 2007 to 2012. He had also spent time coaching at South Carolina State and Morehouse.
He had returned to Georgia in the 2012-2013 season as an operations coordinator and moved to assistant coach a year later.
Jonas has been a lucky charm for the basketball team as his playing career and coaching career has been successful during his tenure. The bulldogs have cheerfully posted their winningest four-year SEC total of forty-two victories during his tenure.
